Driving through tunnels requires heightened awareness due to the unique dangers they present. The abrupt change in lighting upon entering and exiting can temporarily affect vision, and shifts in airflow can impact vehicle stability. Therefore, it is essential to reduce speed, switch on your headlights, and maintain a safe following distance, avoiding any unnecessary lane changes.

Before entering, familiarize yourself with the information provided on the blue rectangular signs, which detail the tunnel’s name, length, and emergency facilities. Adhere strictly to the mandatory speed limits, indicated by a red circle, and be mindful of any advisory speed limits shown on square blue signs. It is compulsory to use dipped headlights, not just daytime running lights, to ensure your vehicle is visible from both the front and rear.

Inside the tunnel, obey all lane control signals, whether they are traffic lights or illuminated arrows and crosses. Overtaking is generally forbidden in two-way tunnels unless extra lanes are provided. Maintain a minimum following distance of 100 meters (a four-second gap) from the vehicle ahead, or 150 meters (a six-second gap) for vehicles over 3,500 kg.

Upon exiting, your eyes will need a moment to readjust to the natural light. A sign with a headlight symbol and a question mark will remind you to turn off your headlights if they are no longer needed. Remember that personal mobility vehicles like electric scooters are prohibited from using tunnels.
