Alcohol limits in Spain – What every driver must know

Driving under the influence is one of the most serious traffic violations in Spain. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, knowing the legal alcohol limits can help you stay safe and avoid heavy penalties.


🚘 Legal Limits

  • General Drivers:
    • 0.5 g/l in blood
    • 0.25 mg/l in breath
  • New Drivers (licensed less than 2 years) and Professional Drivers:
    • 0.3 g/l in blood
    • 0.15 mg/l in breath

⚠️ Penalties for Exceeding the Limit

  • Fines of up to €1,000
  • Points loss: 4 to 6 points depending on the level
  • Driving ban (suspension for up to 4 years)
  • Prison for levels over 1.2 g/l or if involved in an accident

Remember: in Spain, you start with 12 points, and losing 6 at once can put your licence at risk very quickly.
