Alcohol limits in Spain – What every driver must know
Driving under the influence is one of the most serious traffic violations in Spain. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, knowing the legal alcohol limits can help you stay safe and avoid heavy penalties.
🚘 Legal Limits
- General Drivers:
- 0.5 g/l in blood
- 0.25 mg/l in breath
- New Drivers (licensed less than 2 years) and Professional Drivers:
- 0.3 g/l in blood
- 0.15 mg/l in breath
⚠️ Penalties for Exceeding the Limit
- Fines of up to €1,000
- Points loss: 4 to 6 points depending on the level
- Driving ban (suspension for up to 4 years)
- Prison for levels over 1.2 g/l or if involved in an accident
Remember: in Spain, you start with 12 points, and losing 6 at once can put your licence at risk very quickly.
