Do You Know the Emergency Corridor Procedure?

The upcoming reform of Spain’s General Traffic Regulations, expected in 2026, will include clear instructions on how to act in emergency situations.
Specifically, Article 32 will establish the obligation for vehicles to move toward the sides on highways and motorways when driving very slowly (at pedestrian speed) or when stopped due to traffic congestion.
Starting in 2026, the DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority) will alert drivers about emergencies in advance, so they can get ready to clear the way for emergency vehicles — even before they hear sirens or see flashing lights.
This regulation for so-called Emergency Corridors (used by ambulances, police and fire services) is a measure already enforced in a dozen European countries, including Austria, Poland and Germany — the latter being a pioneer since the 1970s.
