New Alcohol Limits in Spain

Many of you have been asking us when the new alcohol limit announced by Spain’s Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska will come into effect…

⏳ When will the new alcohol limit take effect in 🇪🇦❓

The DGT is planning to lower the legal blood alcohol limit to 0.2 g/L (0.1 mg/L in breath) for all drivers. This change will align the limits for professional and novice drivers, compared to the current limit of 0.5 g/L (0.25 mg/L in breath).

This reform, supported by the Spanish Congress in early 2025, will be included in the updated version of Article 20 of the General Traffic Regulations.

While an exact effective date hasn’t been announced yet, the new limit is expected to come into force in late 2025, most likely during the final quarter of the year, after its official publication in the BOE (Official State Gazette).
