€200 fine for wearing sunglasses while driving

In recent days, a headline has gone viral claiming that police can fine you for driving with sunglasses. While it’s eye-catching, the news actually refers **exclusively** to **category 4 sunglasses**.
**What the DGT says:**
The DGT does not explicitly ban any type of sunglasses, but traffic regulations require drivers to maintain **sufficient visibility at all times**.
**Why category 4 is a problem:**
Blocks **97–98% of light**, which can greatly reduce visibility.
Dangerous in tunnels, shaded roads, or at dawn/dusk.
Comparable to “driving almost blind” in some conditions.
**Not recommended for driving:**
* Category 4 sunglasses
* Photochromatic sunglasses (take 3–5 minutes to adapt to light changes)
**Safe and recommended for driving:**
* Category 2 and 3 sunglasses (good balance between protection and visibility)
Don’t worry — police won’t be stopping drivers just to check the category of their sunglasses.
However… if you are involved in an accident and poor visibility caused by these glasses is a factor, you **could** face a fine of up to **€200**.
