New Field on DGT Reports: “Manipulador de Placas” – What Does It Mean?

If you’ve recently ordered a vehicle report from the DGT, you might have noticed a new field: “Manipulador de Placas” (Plate Maker or literally Plate Handler). But what is it and why is it suddenly showing up?
This new field refers to the authorised workshop or provider that manufactured and issued the number plates currently on the vehicle. It’s part of a wider push by the DGT to increase traceability and prevent fraud when it comes to Spanish vehicle registrations.
The change stems from Royal Decree 885/2020, which introduced strict requirements for workshops to digitally report every plate produced, including the reason (e.g. theft, loss, or import), along with the plate maker’s ID and vehicle details.
Until recently, this information was kept in internal records, but as of 2025, the DGT has begun showing the plate maker on their official reports, making the process more transparent for buyers, sellers, and anyone checking a vehicle’s history.
For anyone importing or registering a vehicle in Spain, this highlights the importance of using an authorised plate supplier. It also means that vehicle reports now provide even more insight into the vehicle’s background.
