Is Spain About to Ban Driving Alone? Here’s the Truth…

You may have seen headlines claiming the DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority) is about to force drivers to have at least two people per car in cities… and fine anyone driving alone.

👉 So what’s the truth?

✅ The DGT is studying proposals to introduce a “two people per car” rule in some urban and VAO (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes, similar to other European countries.

✅ They are also looking at automatic controls with cameras and sensors to enforce this, but it’s only at the study stage right now.

✅ The Government (not just the DGT) is also considering one car per household limits in crowded areas, and daily charges for non-residents, like those already in place in Ibiza and Formentera.

❌ What’s NOT true (yet):

– There is no national law today that bans driving alone.

– There are no fines in place for solo drivers outside specific VAO lanes.

– You can still legally drive alone anywhere in Spain.

🚦 What this means for you

For now, nothing changes. These are ideas under discussion, not rules. If anything does become law, it will take time and we’ll make sure you’re the first to know.
