Taking Your Car Out of Spain? Don’t Forget This Step

If you permanently export your vehicle and register it in another country, Spanish law says you should de-register it here once the new registration is complete.
Why?
Stops Spanish road tax (IVTM) bills arriving in your name
Prevents fines abroad being linked to you
Closes the vehicle record at the DGT
This process is called baja definitiva por exportación and requires proof of the new registration plus the original Spanish paperwork and plates.
How you can do it:
In person at a DGT office
Via the MiDGT app
At a local gestoría
Using our online service
It’s a simple step that can potentially years of unnecessary taxes, fines, or legal issues. Once done, you’ll receive a DGT certificate confirming the vehicle is off the system in Spain.
