What Does a Speed Limit Sign Tell Us? by COYS RENT-A-CAR

It might seem obvious… but speed limit signs mean **more than you think** — and not understanding them properly can **cost you**
—
**It’s Not a Target – It’s a Limit**
A speed limit sign shows the **maximum permitted speed** in **kilometres per hour (km/h)** in Spain
Example: A sign with **80** means you **must not exceed 80 km/h**.
It does **not** mean you *should* drive at 80 — driving slower may be more appropriate depending on the situation
—
**”A Bit Over” = Still Breaking the Law**
Forget the myth that you’re “allowed to go a little over.”
The **margin of error** in speed cameras is technical — it does **not** give drivers permission to exceed the limit!
—
**Where the Speed Limit Starts & Ends**
The speed limit is **mandatory from the sign itself** — you should already have reduced speed *before* reaching it.
It ends when:
You pass an “End of speed limit” or “End of prohibitions” sign
You leave a **non-priority road** and join a **priority road**
The **hazard** ends (if shown alongside a danger sign like a bend or junction)
