Giving Way to Pedestrians in Spain by COYS RENT-A-CAR

Respecting pedestrian priority isn’t just polite — it’s the **law**
**Zebra Crossings = Mandatory Stop**
If a pedestrian is **waiting** to cross and it’s safe, you should stop.
If they’re **already crossing**, you **must stop**
But that’s not all…
—
**Turning at a Junction? Give Way!**
Even without a zebra crossing, if you’re turning at a junction and a pedestrian is crossing — **you must let them pass first**.
**Article 65** of Spanish traffic law covers this, and so does **UK Highway Code Rules 170 & H2**
—
**Crossing a Pavement (e.g., Vado Access)?**
Whether entering or exiting a **garage**, or crossing any **sidewalk**, **pedestrians always have priority**.
**In Pedestrian Zones**
If driving through a **shared space** or designated pedestrian zone, you **must yield** to foot traffic.
—
**Bus Stops & Vulnerable Groups**
You must give way when:
* Pedestrians are **getting on/off buses**
* They’re between the vehicle and **a safe pedestrian area**
* You encounter **military personnel in uniform**, **school groups**, or **organised marches**
(Article 23.3)
—
**Reminder: “Vehicles” = ALL Vehicles**
This includes:
Bicycles
E-scooters
Motorbikes
Cars, vans & more
Violations of these rules are classified as **serious offences**
