What’s the Difference Between Green Plates & Red Plates in Spain?

If you’ve ever spotted a car in Spain with green or red temporary plates and wondered what they mean, here’s a quick breakdown
GREEN PLATES (Placas Verdes):
These are temporary import plates issued to vehicles that are in the process of being registered in Spain.
They are valid for up to 60 days and allow you to drive legally while waiting for paperwork or inspections like the ITV to be completed.
Ideal for foreign vehicles being registered in Spain
Ability to take out full Spanish Insurance policy
Usually required to retrieve impounded vehicles
RED PLATES (Placas Rojas):
These are dealer or trader plates used by businesses such as car dealers and garages.
They’re designed to let companies move, test, or deliver vehicles that aren’t yet registered for road use.
Not for private use
Must always be accompanied by valid documentation
Useful for transporting cars to ITV or workshops
In Summary:
If you’re importing a vehicle for yourself, you’ll likely need green plates.
If you’re a business moving stock or doing test drives, you’ll be issued red plates.
