Have You Noticed the Red Lines on the Back of Trucks?

While driving around Spain, have you seen red reflective lines outlining the back (and sometimes sides) of trucks or tankers? These aren’t just for decoration — they’re a mandatory safety feature!

Since late 2024, these reflective markings, officially known as V-23 signs, have been required by law. They help outline the shape and size of large vehicles, especially in low-visibility conditions like nighttime or fog.

The V-23 must be placed:

On the rear and sides of trucks

On vehicles over 7.5 tonnes, longer than 6 meters and wider than 2.1 meters

On trailers over 3.5 tonnes

Applies to vehicles registered after July 10, 2011 and before December 20, 2022.

Vehicles registered before 2011 can still install the V-23 markings voluntarily — and it’s highly recommended to boost visibility and reduce risk!
