Have You Been Fined by Police? Know Your Rights in Spain

If a traffic officer informs you that you’ve committed an offence, and you can’t ❌ prove your residency in Spain, here’s what you need to know:

❗ Immediate Payment or Vehicle Immobilization

If you’re unable to show proof of residency, you must either:

💰 PAY the fine on the spot with a 50% discount.

This 50% discount on traffic fines in Spain only applies if the driver:

✅ Acknowledges the offence

✅ Agrees with the fine

✅ Pays it immediately

This benefit is available to both residents and non-residents — as long as the fine is accepted and paid on the spot.

or the other option is:

💰 Pay a DEPOSIT equal to the fine in order to continue driving.

⚠️ When you do not agree with the fine and decide to appeal it, the discount is no longer applicable.

Why? Because it is understood that the driver does not accept the offence and intends to challenge it through legal channels.

💬 In short:

Pay immediately = ✅ 50% discount

Appeal the fine = ❌ No discount

🕒 What If You Don’t Pay Right Away?

🚫 If you don’t pay, your vehicle will be immobilized until the full fine (as a deposit) is paid. The legal process will continue afterward.
