TYRE SAFETY

Your tyres are the only part of your vehicle that make contact with the road, yet they’re often overlooked until something goes wrong. Proper tyre care isn’t just about avoiding fines or passing the ITV… it’s about safety, fuel economy, and peace of mind.
Here are 10 things every driver should check to keep their tyres in great condition and avoid unnecessary risks:
CHECK TYRE PRESSURES
Why it matters: Under-inflated tyres reduce fuel efficiency, increase wear, and can lead to blowouts. Over-inflated tyres reduce grip and comfort.
Tip: Check monthly and before long trips. Always use the manufacturer’s recommended PSI.
INSPECT TREAD DEPTH
Why it matters: Worn tyres increase stopping distance and reduce grip, especially in wet conditions.
Minimum legal tread in Spain & EU: 1.6mm
Ideal for safety: 3mm or more
LOOK FOR UNEVEN WEAR
Why it matters: Uneven tyre wear can point to issues like misalignment, worn suspension, or incorrect tyre pressure.
Tip: Check both the inner and outer edges of the tread regularly.
KEEP AN EYE ON TYRE AGE
Why it matters: Tyres naturally degrade over time, even if the tread looks fine. Rubber hardens and cracks, affecting grip and safety.
Tip: Most tyre manufacturers recommend replacing tyres every 6 to 10 years, regardless of mileage. Check the DOT code for the manufacture date.
AVOID HITTING KERBS & POTHOLES
Why it matters: Impact damage can cause hidden internal tyre failures or weaken the sidewalls.
Tip: Slow down near potholes and be careful parking near kerbs.
ROTATE TYRES
Why it matters: Rotating tyres ensures even wear across all four tyres, extending their lifespan.
Tip: Rotate every 10,000–12,000 km or as advised by your vehicle manual.
CHECK FOR CRACKS, BULGES & FOREIGN OBJECTS
Why it matters: These signs often indicate damage or internal weakening. A bulge can mean a blowout risk is imminent.
Tip: Do a visual inspection every few weeks and especially before long journeys.
REPLACE DAMAGED OR WORN VALVES
Why it matters: A faulty valve can lead to slow leaks and pressure loss.
Tip: Always fit a new valve when getting tyres replaced. Use valve caps to keep dirt and moisture out.
CHECK SPARE TYRE
Why it matters: Many spares are forgotten until they’re needed – and by then, they’re flat, cracked, or unsafe.
Tip: Include your spare tyre in your monthly pressure checks. Make sure it’s not out of date, and if it’s a space-saver type, know its speed and distance limits.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT TYRE
Why it matters: Summer tyres harden in winter; winter tyres wear faster in hot weather.
Tip: Use winter tyres in cold months or opt for all-season tyres if you don’t want to change them twice a year.
Keeping an eye on your tyres doesn’t take long and it’s a simple way to stay safe and avoid problems down the road, both for you and others around you.
